About silk

Sericulture, or the production of silk has been carried on for thousands of years. It began in China where it was a closely guarded secret. Over the centuries ,eggs were smuggled out of China and centres of sericulture were established in Japan India, and the Middle East .

Silk is obtained from a variety of moth, but the finest is obtained from the cocoon of the caterpillar of the moth Bombyx Mori and is fed on the leaves of the mulberry tree.

When mature and ready to spin its cocoon, the caterpillar exudes a little silk solution and builds an oval casing around its body. The cocoon is completed in 24 to 72 hours.

The silk filaments are then reeled of the cocoon into hanks.

(The Story of Silk, Jacqui Robertson).

Teaching, and courses run by the artist

After many years attending courses and exploring various methods , I now concentrate on teaching silk painting in my studio, give talks and demonstrations where required and, when invited, I participate with teachers as an artist working together in both primary and comprehensive education.

In-set days can be arranged in a range of subjects. Please contact me for details.

I hold sessions from 10am to 4pm. All equipment for the courses is provided and is inclusive in the prices quoted.

A light lunch, coffee and afternoon tea is provided . Courses can include bed and breakfast as I run a three-star, Welsh Tourist Board B&B. So you could spend time exploring this lovely unspoiled area with its superb beaches, scenery and local inns.

I am presently concentrating on my surroundings for inspiration. These include sea and sky, rocks, pebbles, driftwood and the wonderful sunsets which Ogmore-by-Sea experiences.

I am offering courses in my studio in the coming year, and will hold one-day courses.
